It is difficult to construct and maintain new roads in the hilly areas of the state.Most of the important places of Himachal Pradesh are well connected with the roadways. Few of the roads get closed during winters and monsoon seasons due to snowfall and landslides.Almost each and every part of the state is linked by roads.The Himachal Road Transport Corporation is running its buses covering the whole state. There is huge network of HRTC to cater the needs of the people.

Major Destination Getting Around In Himachal Pradesh

Shimla Most of Shimla can be covered on foot but the climb can sometimes get arduous. Kashmiri porters are a common site near the railway station and bus stand. Taxis are available for hire at the Tourist Reception Centre on Cart Road.The Vishal Himachal Taxi Union (Ph: 0177 – 257645) runs fixed fare taxis, though the rates listed out are for the peak season. In addition, mini buses and Himachal Tourism buses operating from the Mall are available for local tours. HPTDC conducts the following tours from the Tourist Office, The Mall, Shimla.

Manali : The distance from Delhi via Mandi is 585 km, and from Shimla it is 270 km From Shimla, Chandigarh and Delhi, the Himachal Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) plies luxury buses to Manali. Moreover, the state transport corporation buses connect almost all the major places of the entire valley.Taxis are also available to make visit to different places easier for the tourist.Private tour operators also run scheduled tourist coaches that take one around almost all the places of importance within a fixed time.Auto rickshaws and buses are the commonest and most preferred modes of transport for travel in and around the town area.

Dharamshala : There are plenty of local buses shuttling between Dharamshala and McLeodganj. Besides this, shared taxis at about Rs.5 per seat are available. Autorickshaws also ply between McLeodganj and the hamlet of Bhagsu.

Dalhousie : Ponies and dandies (local palanquins) are used for short distance travel. Jeeps and taxis are also available and can be hired from the Tourist office or private agencies
